Registering with your Local Authority

If you live in one of these West London boroughs - Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon, or Hounslow, and you are listed on the Housing Register, then you can express an interest in any of the properties listed on this website. You will need to quote your LIN (Locata identification Number) when expressing interest in a property.

If you do not have a LIN number, then it is possible that you are not on the Housing Register in West London. There are two ways of registering with the local authority -

  • online by visiting the following website - Register with Locata
  • or in person, by picking up the relevant forms at your Local Authority office, and you can find the address by visiting the 'contact us' page and clicking on the link to the office you require.

The locata system does not operate in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, so if you would like to express interest in a property and you live in RBKC, then contact a member of the RBKC Letstart team directly and quote the reference number of the property. (The reference number is on the right hand side of the advertisement on the properties page.)

Local Housing Allowance

Changes to the way households receive benefit payments were introduced in April 2008. Local Housing Allowance (LHA) is a new way of working out new claims for Housing Benefit (HB) for tenants renting accommodation from a private landlord.

As a tenant, the changes mean that you will be eligible for a financial amount based on the number of bedrooms you require to house your household members, and you will be able to spend up to that amount on rent for a property.

.... What sized property do you require?

The number of bedrooms in a property you require to house your household is dependent on the number of adult couples, adult singles, and the age and sex of children that your normally live with. If you want to find out what sized property you are eligible for, click on this link to take you to an entitlement calculator on the LHA Direct website: Bedroom Calculator

.... Find out more about LHA?

You can find out more about LHA on the LHA Direct website.

Do you want to move out of London?

Living in London is not for everyone, and moving out of London might be something that you have considered for some time ... a different lifestyle, moving back to family, or for any reason. If you have applied to your local West London authority for housing assistance or already have a form of council tenancy but would like to move out of London, then there is a relocation process in place to help you.

If this sounds like something you want more information on, then contact your housing officer and ask about the Relocation Referral process.
